The use of polyethylene pipes in power plants is one of the things that makes this type of pipe so valuable.

Before the use of polyethylene pipes in power plants was considered, other non-metallic pipes were commonly used in power plants to avoid higher costs and inevitable corrosion. The pipe was reasonably priced compared to steel. It also had good durability. However, PVC pipe had many disadvantages.

Recently, the use of polyethylene pipes in power plants has become common. In fact, large power plants are considering the use of high-density polyethylene. This pipe is a very durable and corrosion-resistant piping option that can significantly improve hydraulic efficiency. Although the use of HDPE has become more widespread, most steam power plants still use old pipes to transport water. These issues lead to pipe failure and plant shutdowns. At the same time, it has significant disadvantages.

Application of polyethylene pipe in power plants

HDPE is a thermoplastic pipe that is made from petroleum and is completely resistant to corrosion. Since HDPE is very strong, it can withstand environmental factors, chemicals or moisture factors. In fact, HDPE is used in various applications such as mining, chemical/petrochemical industries and other industries.

The use of polyethylene pipes in power plants, especially power plants, has accelerated various activities. This type of pipe is also a good alternative to PVC pipe. Because polyethylene pipes are capable of carrying a large volume of water in the power sector. This water is important for processing, purification and recycling. HDPE pipes are typically used to transport cooling tower water. This application shows that polyethylene pipes are used in one of the most important systems in the power generation process. Since no power plant can operate without purified water, it is vital for operators to have a reliable piping system that can meet the process requirements.

Polyethylene pipe is much more durable than PVC. Industry reports indicate that PVC has an installed life of 8 to 15 years. During this time, PVC pipes undergo significant changes. They also become brittle when there are pressure fluctuations in a system. Therefore, they are more prone to cracking or breaking. Some plant owners recommend replacing PVC pipes every five years to ensure that power generation operations are not affected by PVC degradation.

In comparison, polyethylene pipes can last between 50 and 100 years with almost no degradation during this time. They are also much more flexible and less sensitive to pressure fluctuations. Additionally, HDPE does not rust or rot, keeping the pipes intact for a longer period of time.

The use of polyethylene pipes in power plants is very cost-effective. This is because these pipes have the lowest life cycle cost. In fact, they are more cost-effective than other systems due to features such as no leaks, water savings, fewer new water treatment plants, reduced maintenance services and reduced seasonal water.

Differences in how to install polyethylene and PVC pipes

PVC pipes use waterproof adhesive to connect different sections of the pipe. Whether it is a repair or a new installation, the adhesive takes between eight and 10 hours to dry.

Polyethylene pipes are connected to each other using thermal fusion and after connection, they are pressurized with a leak-free seal in just eight minutes. During the fusing process, the ends of the pipes are heated with a standard tool to melt the surfaces. When moderate pressure is applied to these pipes, the molten surface effluent flows together, forming a homogeneous joint that forms the joint as the material cools. These polyethylene joints are as strong as the pipe itself or stronger. These pipes are lighter and more flexible than PVC pipes.

Polyethylene pipes are used for industrial, agricultural, water supply and landfill purposes.
